Wood + Bird

A few months ago I signed up for the We Love Letterpress - YOUR Exhibition in Ohio. I wanted to enter a piece that would be unique and that could hold its own among other letterpress entries.

Designer Karina Salgado came up with this idea. She took an illustration of an African Crane she had made and turned it into a digital file to make the plates. She really liked the idea of trying to letterpress on wood...and I am always up for a new challenge!

Like a lot of things in my shop, we had to create this piece with very little time. Thankfully the hardest part was actually finding the right type of wood to use. Karina went to every stationary and hobbie store within 30 miles and found thin, but not too thin, balsa wood. It was the perfect texture and thickness for this project.

When it came to printing time, I was nervous. We only had a few sheets of the wood and I needed to ship the project the next day. So being very unlike me, I actually let my friend Mike do the printing. And voila! It turned out great and was a lot easier than we thought. We were all amazed at how much detail actually can be seen in the print.

The other fun news is that the print actually sold at opening night of the event! We learned a new way to make something cool and can't wait to come up with our next project to use wood.

Check out my Etsy store to order yourself one of these limited edition bird prints.
